The Field Witness Society

An International Society for Geography, Exploration and Documentary Practice.
Founded in Turin, Italy · 2026
Mission
The world does not need to be discovered. It needs to be observed more carefully, understood more deeply and documented more responsibly.

The Field Witness Society exists to advance a contemporary practice of geographical exploration grounded in presence, observation and documentation.

We bring together photographers, writers, filmmakers, geographers, researchers, conservationists and field practitioners who engage directly with places, people and environments in order to deepen understanding and create meaningful records of the world.

The Society supports work that is rigorous, independent and responsible, placing knowledge and context above spectacle.

A Field Witness is someone who goes into the field to observe, document and deepen understanding.

Field Witnesses may work through photography, writing, film, geography, science, research, conservation or other documentary disciplines.

Their practices may differ, but they share a common principle: meaningful understanding begins with presence.

Principles

Presence before interpretation

Understanding begins in the field. We value direct observation, time, proximity and lived experience.

Truth before spectacle

Documentation should illuminate reality rather than exaggerate it.

Context matters

No photograph, story, landscape or encounter exists in isolation.

Explore without conquest

Exploration is not ownership. We reject narratives that erase existing knowledge, presence or history.

Observe with respect

People, wildlife and landscapes must be approached with dignity, responsibility and care.

Document with purpose

The strongest fieldwork leaves behind knowledge, testimony, understanding or an enduring documentary record.
